Being in Chicago, doing some work at OWN comes with the territory. Of the many highlights:
This was my first opportunity to do work with broadcast media, and it was totally awesome. The debut highlight in my role as the lead product manager for oprah.com came during the Lance Armstrong interview. The online viewership shot way over 1MM and spanned more than 100 countries. Harpo boasts its own hard-buzzing, in-house data centers, and also leveraged the Akamai CDN to make it happen.
Oprah still comes to town every couple months for recording her Lifeclass episodes. To bring the hot tech for these shows, we crafted a media lab to merge data visualization and social media integation with the television and livestream broadcast. Oprah’s set was transformed with messaging and imagery from around he world, and she didn’t miss a beat looping in her favorite tweet-tweets with the best bing-bings. We even won a Creative Arts Emmy for our work in the media lab… fancy that!
The last ten months at Harpo were spent re-designing the entirety of oprah.com. From a fairly static collection of articles and banners ads, the site rolled into a toolbox of apps designed to help you live your best life. Site catalyst data is used with personalization algorithms and content from the world’s best coaches in spirit, health, money and media to bring unique and compelling experiences to a user base of 40MM per month.
